Second Season of K-On! Accounced
Happy 2010 to those I have not welcomed into the new year yet! With 2010 here, I have a few new plans for the Lone Otaku website and I thought I would share a couple of them here. I hope to keep the site simple and easy to navigate as well as make it a bit more informative. With that in mind, my first change year has been to implement a polling feature. I feel polls, if done right can be fun and informative.
Second change this year… In keeping up with all of the changes and additions of new smart-phones (aka: blackberry, iPhone, Android, etc), I have added a second template. This second template should make viewing the site easier on the newer phones that are increasing in popularity.
Other changes I am thinking about are:
Feel free to weigh in. I’d like to hear what you are interested in seeing. Perhaps I can start posting items that cater to your interests.

Flipping through the Internet this evening I came across this cool application / hardware add-on for iTouch / iPhone. You can now use it as a Universal Remote control. The folks at Think Flood have come up with this cool product they have named Red Eye. Being somewhat of a gadget nut I love the idea. If you have one already, I’d love to hear your opinions of it.
Every once in a while I come across a story that makes me scratch my head and wonder just what the person was thinking. Here is a link to an example where an apparent thief was targeting socks. He was captured after stealing 300 pairs of socks. Wonder what was on his mind…
Today I finally got around to one of the items that has been long on my list. That is to start photographing my figurine collection.
With Horo, I started simple using a simple tan background. I experimented with a number of angles, lighting options and camera settings until I cam up with what I have below. I’m not completely satisfied but these 2 are the best of the lot (in my opinion). I’m a little bugged by the reflection of the lighting from her dress. I need to find something to cut back on the harsh lighting.
For Yui, I started with the same tan background as Horo. My daughter suggested using the box interior as a background and I was very pleased with the result! I know that Yui is not quite in focus but I was running short on time by then. I’d love to have a Figma Yui to compare with the Mobip version side-by-side. Just not in my budget at the moment. I wonder if I can compare with my Nendo Yui…
Anyway, there you have it. I plan to take more since this round turned out so well. Let me know which of the 4 photos you like the best. Here’s a poll for you…

I plan to do some more photo shoots since this seem to go quite well. I am using a Canon Powershot SD 800 IS for my sessions. Some day I’ll get that dream DSLR. I hope to raid the local hobby shop some day and see what kind of small decorative items they have that would be suited for using in my shoots.
Here in the US, a couple of the TV networks may try to imitate some of the popular Japanese challenge game shows but I think they fail. I get the impression they they are to afraid they will get their assets sued off if they try to go the full extend that Japanese TV seems to go.
Take this challenge for example. The goal is to ride the full length of floating containers tied together. Roughly 300 meters distance. Fun to watch…
I saw this and thought Ninja Warrior, another Japanese challenge show that has been airing on the G4 cable channel for a while.

Fate/Stay Night Saber Triumphant Excalibur by GSC is available now for pre-order. Retail price is ¥9,333. Due in July 2010.
This is a nicely detailed version of Saber from the upcoming Fate/Stay Night movie. Saber, thought to be the strongest servant, stands ready to fight. This version of Saber comes with 2 interchangeable swords, Excalibur and a wind sword. The wind sword takes advantage of clear plastic to give the feeling of invisibility.

Initial Opinion – Being a Saber fan, I’d have to say this is an easy “Get”. The detail on her armor seems quite impressive. I also like her expression and the fact 2 blades are included. Good Smile Company (GSC) has been putting out some really nice figures lately.
Just what I needed… another version of Mio for my collection. Seriously did not think that I would get so hooked on Mio as a character, or K-On! as a series. Well, anyway, before I digress to far… Here she is, isn’t she cute?
More detailed images can be found here. On the link you can see the figure as it progresses. Don’t know the release date yet but from what is shown in the preview pictures, it looks pretty darn good!

Hubble Telescope
If you have the ability to enjoy movies presented in IMAX 3D then let me make a recommendation for you. During the previews before the awesome Avatar movie started, there was one that caught my eye. Warner Brothers along with NASA are releasing a documentary titled Hubble 3D. It really caught my eye for the clarity / apparent quality of the images shot. The preview itself was also presented in 3D. There was not much shown during the preview but I was wow’d. This film is narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio.
