The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi – worthwhile viewing entertainment

I seriously feel like I am way behind on the times. Especially when I finally pick up a copy of and it is in the Classics collection. This is a cool series and I don’t know why I thought I should avoid it.
Haruhi sure is a character full of life. Always looking to find Espers, Aliens or time travelers. Little does she know that her club (the SOS Brigade) consists of just that and her reluctant friend from class. It’s a daily adventure to keep her from becoming angry or to bored lest the world as we know it gets destroyed by her imagination. Apparently Haruhi has an ability to recreate the world on a whim and is not aware of it. This is a series I recommend checking out.

A simple question about viewing habits

I am trying to get an idea about how other fellow Otaku keep track of what episodes they watch. Do you write it down on a scrap of paper? Log it in a spreadsheet? Use the services provided by other sites such as MyAnimeList or -Planet?

For some time now I have been tracking what I watch in a spreadsheet and as useful as that is, it is becoming cumbersome. It is large and Excel takes a bit of time to load. I have recently started writing my own application to track the shows I watch and it is much smaller and quicker than Excel. I find myself needing such tracking especially when watching a number of different series between Netflix, ANN, The Anime Network, Crunchy Roll, etc. You get the picture I think.

I wanted a place to track: Title, Episode, Where seen, Rating (5 stars), Status (own, want, seen). I hope to add a field or to more for series description, single screen shot (to prompt the brain cell), perhaps notes that could be used for blog posting.

How do you track your viewing habits?

If you had a small portable app, what would you include for features?

I have yet to see but I can tell you the art and figures captivated me early on. The detail put into the figures by Good Smile is just really good. This new nendo is no exception. The Dead Master stands ready to fight the . Here’s your chance to reserve the Dead Master and stage your own nendo scale battles.

From the game series comes this charmer, Kobayakawa Rinko, in her stunning Bikini. She is ready to go play at the beach with you. Got your tanning lotion? This figure is part of Waves collection of Beach Queens. She comes with 2 expressions and a movable neck. I have never played the game but if I were to base my opinions on other images I have seen of her, this is pretty nicely done.

As much as I like the looks and details on this figure, I’ll have to pass… To many other orders pending (read, I should stop ordering scale figures).

Eagerly awaiting September

I am not really that much into gaming mainly because they kill so much of my time. I used to stay up till 2am nightly playing and now I might get on there for an hour per month… (kinda wonder why I still pay for it) Anyways, I am excited for September because one of my favorite series of games will be coming out with a new release. What is it you say? , Birth by Sleep. It covers events that took place before the regular series. A prequel if you will.

I have all of the games thus far and when I can peel my kids away from them I enjoy playing as well. The only downside is I will have to invest in a PSP. I guess that isn’t to bad, just means that figure I wanted will have to wait longer… Sorry Mio…

Are you a Kingdom Hearts fan? Will you be getting a copy as well? Investing in the PSP special release? Here’s a trailer for you to enjoy in the meantime…

So Much Anime, So Little Time

After having a week off from work and with that, more time to explore related content, I feel I will never get through it all. I’ve been picking up some shows on Netflix lately with their streaming feature. Lately I’ve been watching “Now and Then, Here and There”.

It is a pretty gritty episode with a fair amount of physical violence as well as some implied misconduct against a couple of the female characters. It is about a planet whose water resources have all but dried up and the battles that ensue over the limited resources. About a King who is fast loosing his grip on reality as he tries to force a girl named LaLa Ru possessing the power to release water for him. He believes this would make him revered / feared by all.

His army is made up of kids who have been orphaned as they were captured to fight in the war. The main character, Shu, has been captured as well and is being forced to fight. Shu was captured in Japan when he attempted to save LaLa Ru from being re-captured. Shu is also desperate to save LaLa Ru, from the King who is obsessed with controlling. (She is said to be able to summon a great amount of water)

Shu also meets another girl during his captivity named Sarah. her story seems to be a sad one as she was captured from America having been mistaken for LaLa Ru. Sarah seems to be used as entertainment for the older males and has become deathly afraid of them. Shu may be the only one who can save her.

The series is quite dark with the violence and the story line. It can be a bit depressing as well. It moves fairly well but I kinda wish some of the underlying stories would get resolved sooner. Like Sarahs storyline, you get to feeling pretty bad about her. If you like dark story lines and don’t mind a bit of violence, then you may appreciate this series. I have to watch a light hearted show afterwords usually to improve my mood.

Some of my viewing – comedic

Since I haven’t been posting with great frequency, I thought I would at least take a moment and share 3 of the shows that have me distracted. Distracted enough that it is wee hours in the morning and I’m to tired to post.. sad, huh… Any way, 3 shows are winning in the crack me up department. They are “”, “” and “”. Ok so Amagami SS may not be that funny but it is a fun to watch.

Arakawa Under the Bridge – is a series about a group of people who live under a bridge that don’t fit in society for one reason or another. One day the lead character happened to be rescued from drowning by Nino and to repay his debt, agreed to live with them under the bridge. The show follows his day to day interactions. Really pretty funny, especially when something comes at you that you weren’t expecting.

Amagami SS – a series that is a number of short arcs where the main character, Tachibana, becomes involved with a female at his school. It explores from from first meeting, their getting to know each other, and at the end of the arc, what became of them. This, at least to me is a pretty well done series. I found myself hooked on it right off.

Seitokai Yakuindomo – Series about a boy transferring to a high school which until that year had been an all girls school. He becomes “inducted” into the student council by the president. This show does not hold back when it comes to misinterpreting actions as being sexual in nature or playing on words. The student council president will spout something off at any given moment which will catch a person off guard and can make the moment quite funny.

Awesome Akiyama Mio Figure by Daiki Kougyo – Reservable

Daiki Koukyo is not a company that I am familiar with however, looking at the photos of their work on this figure, I am impressed. There are many versions of Akiyama Mio available lately but this one has to be one of my favorites this far. Note the details in both the Bass Guitar and the Amplifier. This is a 1/6 scale figure which allows for greater detail. (about 10 inches in height) Her face is a little different than other versions but to me seems more true to the show. At roughly ¥13,800, this is not one of the cheaper figures available today. Have a look for yourself…

Mio can be reserved at Hobby Search today. Retail is around ¥13,800.

For me, this is one of this instances where I feel if I don’t act now, I’ll miss out. This figure stands at around 10 inches tall and would make a cool center piece in my Mio shrine, er, uh, K-On collection.

Other vendors to check would include: AmiAmi and Hobby Link Japan

I was reading another blog today and the author mentioned a game he was playing called “Alien Swarm”. Being a free game, of course I had to check it out. Not to bad for free and you can have four of your buddies play along with you as well. Here’s some sample gameplay that I found on the net.

This game is made by the creators of the Half Life series of games. Have you played this one?
