I am trying to get an idea about how other fellow Otaku keep track of what episodes they watch. Do you write it down on a scrap of paper? Log it in a spreadsheet? Use the services provided by other sites such as MyAnimeList or Anime-Planet?
For some time now I have been tracking what I watch in a spreadsheet and as useful as that is, it is becoming cumbersome. It is large and Excel takes a bit of time to load. I have recently started writing my own application to track the shows I watch and it is much smaller and quicker than Excel. I find myself needing such tracking especially when watching a number of different series between Netflix, ANN, The Anime Network, Crunchy Roll, etc. You get the picture I think.
I wanted a place to track: Title, Episode, Where seen, Rating (5 stars), Status (own, want, seen). I hope to add a field or to more for series description, single screen shot (to prompt the brain cell), perhaps notes that could be used for blog posting.
How do you track your viewing habits?

If you had a small portable app, what would you include for features?

I honestly never keep track of what I watch. I never felt the need to, but a few people have recommended myanimelist.com
It would be a lot easier than keeping up spreadsheets, and they may have an export function? I am not sure if they do or not, but it may not be a bad idea to check it out at least. At least then it would take off the stress of a spreadsheet and give you something to present on your blog.
Good points. I started a spreadsheet originally before I was aware of those sites. I have had it for some time now. One of the main reasons was my viewing preferences can be all over the board at times. One week, moe story, violent thriller the next. I just got tired of trying to remember what show I watched last in a particular series.
My spreadsheet also incorporates a rudimentary rating scale and a field to remind me where I saw it at if not in my collection. My spread sheet has grown to tracking my figure collection as well. Order dates, vendors, price and expected release date. I also throw in a URL to the figure pages where I originally offer from. Anyway, my spread sheet has grown.
To make a long story shorter, I wanted a more portable version that did not require having a spreadsheet app installed just to access. I have written an app to track my viewing list and I am slowly enhancing it. Perhaps I’ll post on it. Anyway, the hopes is to get opinions to help determine features to include. If I had a Mac, I’d love to try my hand at some objective c to develop one for the iPhone.
Any suggestions are welcome, I’ll post another article soon on my tracking app.
