Read some interesting news today. Funimation and NicoNico have joined forces to provide streaming services. The combination of these two can prove to be a win win for fans and providers alike. Being powerhouse in distribution, Funimation can gain possible first dibs to shows for simulcast.
Funimation and NicoNico.com have announced a partnership that will begin with the simulcast of several of the newest anime series from Japan, premiering this Fall. The companies will work together to acquire new titles from Japan.
Launching this new partnership, the simulcast titles include:
C3
The Future Diary
Guilty Crown
Hagani (Boku Wa Tomodachi Ga Sukunai)
LASTEXITLE ~Fam, The Silver Wing~
Maken-Ki!
Shakugan no Shana III Final
Part of the investment will help niconico.com’s growth in the US. With its growth it could become a leading source of streaming subtitled anime in North America.
Niconico.com gains the backing of a licensing giant in Funimation. With that it stands to gain first pick in titles to stream. This should provide more selection for DVD/BD’s and allow more money to flow back to Japan.
Other companies like Crunchyroll stand to lose their selection of shows to stream. The could partner with other companies to provide a selection to compete. (ie: Neo-ADV, Section23, Sentai Filmworks, Viz, Bandai Entertainment or Media Blasters)
Not being a marketing person or a financial analyst, I can’t anticipate any more than what I read on the Internet. I like the sounds of this partnership but I hope it does not drive Crunchyroll or other similar services out of business. To me, Crunchyroll has the streaming service well thought out. They provide quality video and do so with a short turn around after Japanese premier.
Niconico.com still needs to work on their video quality and how it is destributed. This anime fan does not like chat sessions going on next to a video I’m watching. I would also like to see a Roku channel for niconico.com similar to Crunchyroll.
Looking forward to seeing what becomes of this. What about you?
