Just came back from watching Tron Legacy and I for one was very pleased. If you had seen the original movie when it came out in theaters 20+ years ago you know it was pretty revolutionary for the computer graphics used at the time. I watched the original with my kids a month or so back and they were none to excited about the graphics. And I couldn’t blame them what with other movies such as Shrek and Monsters Inc. that have come out since. Myself, I can recall being wow’d while sitting in the theater at the light cycles and the recognizers and tanks.
Well tonight, I was wow’d again. This time it was how well the story was put together. I went in thinking, this will be an all eye and ear candy movie. I was wrong. The 2 hours was spent telling the story of how the digital world came to be and how Flynn disappeared. Sorry, I don’t want to spoil the story to much. I will say that if you can see it in IMAX 3D, do so. It is especially cool if you have a theater that does not skimp on the volume. I was very pleased to actually feel the Recognizers as they flew past.
I was a bit disappointed in the turnout though. I’m not sure it was because it is Christmas Eve or just lack of interest in the movie. I know there have been comments posted to the effect of “why do we need another Tron movie”. Well, if you are going to say something stinks before seeing it, ya might keep your comments to yourself until after you have laid down your money. Walt Disney said of the Fantasia film that it is one to be improved on time and again (hence Fantasia 2000). I think the same can be said of others of their film franchises. Return to Witch mountain was a good remake example. I enjoyed the show enough to want to go back. I only hope it is still in IMAX when I can go. I’m also looking forward to a BluRay release for the sole purpose of rattling the pictures off the wall.
If you have seen it, I’d like to hear your opinions too.
