Today I finally got around to one of the items that has been long on my list. That is to start photographing my figurine collection.

With Horo, I started simple using a simple tan background. I experimented with a number of angles, lighting options and camera settings until I cam up with what I have below. I’m not completely satisfied but these 2 are the best of the lot (in my opinion). I’m a little bugged by the reflection of the lighting from her dress. I need to find something to cut back on the harsh lighting.

For Yui, I started with the same tan background as Horo. My daughter suggested using the box interior as a background and I was very pleased with the result! I know that Yui is not quite in focus but I was running short on time by then. I’d love to have a Figma Yui to compare with the Mobip version side-by-side. Just not in my budget at the moment. I wonder if I can compare with my Nendo Yui…

I plan to do some more photo shoots since this seem to go quite well. I am using a Canon Powershot SD 800 IS for my sessions. Some day I’ll get that dream DSLR. I hope to raid the local hobby shop some day and see what kind of small decorative items they have that would be suited for using in my shoots.

Fate/Stay Night Saber Triumphant Excalibur by GSC is available now for pre-order. Retail price is ¥9,333. Due in July 2010.

This is a nicely detailed version of Saber from the upcoming Fate/Stay Night movie. Saber, thought to be the strongest servant, stands ready to fight. This version of Saber comes with 2 interchangeable swords, Excalibur and a wind sword. The wind sword takes advantage of clear plastic to give the feeling of invisibility.

Initial Opinion – Being a Saber fan, I’d have to say this is an easy “Get”. The detail on her armor seems quite impressive. I also like her expression and the fact 2 blades are included. Good Smile Company (GSC) has been putting out some really nice figures lately.

Just what I needed… another version of Mio for my collection. Seriously did not think that I would get so hooked on Mio as a character, or K-On! as a series. Well, anyway, before I digress to far… Here she is, isn’t she cute?

Danny Choo has posted some awesome shots showing a sneak peek to the Anime version of Black Rock Shooter figurine. Compared to the original and blade editions, I think this versions tops both of them. I’m sitting on “pins and needles” just waiting to see what the fully colored version will look like.

Just a quick preview post here for some items coming to your shelves soon.

To start, Figma Hirasawa Yui School Uniform Edition. She’s available now for reservation at several online retailers. Retail price 2,800 ¥. At last check, Hobby Search has closed its reservations.

Of course Yui would probably be in a world of trouble were it not for her ever dependable little sister, Hirasawa Ui. She is due out in February, retail price 2,500 ¥.

Next up, a real cutie. Snow Miku Hatsune. This is a special edition created as a replica of the sculpture to be erected at the Sapporo Snow Festival. Note the transparent ends of her hair and the snowflakes throughout… Retail 3,000 ¥.

We pause now as a ogle over this next figure… Another version of Saber from the series Fate / Stay Night. Ok, I admit it, I’m a Saber fan. This may look familiar to a previous version because it is. Some of her armaments has been removed and facial detail changed. I like the detail on the scabbard and the base. Retail 9,000 ¥.

And lastly for now, MORE K-On! poison. This time in the form of both Mio and Ritsu in Nendoroid form performing for you on an included di:stage. Retail at 8,000 ¥.

Each of these figures are due to be release in February of this year. Talk about short notice… I will probably have to pass on these as I am still expecting figures I ordered last year. If I can, I would have to choose Ui and Miku out of this batch. I don’t have any Miku figurines in my collection but this Snow version is just to cute.

2009, one heck of a year. I hope all of you faired well and that 2010 proves to be an even better year than the last. For me, 2009 was a year of firsts… I got really into anime as I discovered new sources I never knew existed. Set my sites on attending some conventions and hope one year to make it to Japan for a convention. Also, this past year I discovered (much to my wallets regret) collecting figurines. Thank you to all that contributed to the poisoning of my mind. I appreciate it!

So, what did I collect this year? (In no particular order)

Drossel – just looks awesome, is awesome. One of my favorites thus far in my collection. I wish Disney would show Fireball here in the States but the dialog would probably get lost in translation.
Yui – from K-On! Lets face it, she’s kinda cute and gets into all sorts of antics. My daughter fell in love with her character on K-On! so I ended up getting the Mobip figurine.
Mio, Ritsu and Mugi – Not wanting to split the group up, I had to get Mio, Ritsu and Mugi as well in Mobip form.
Horo – My first exposure to Spice and Wolf was when I heard the closing song for the first season, “The Wolf Whistling Song” by Ringo Hiyori. I was listening to Radio Kawaii on WinAmp when I first heard the tune and had to know what the anime was about. I ended up with 2 figurines of Horo. One from Season One and another as she appears in the Manga.
Rin, Kuro – The next 2 are kind of an odd selection. I had seen one of them in photos taken in all sorts of outdoor / indoor arrangements and just thought it was cute. My first figurine collected, ever, Rin Kokonoe. Since I don’t like splitting up sets, I also picked up Kuro Kagami, my last figurine of 2009.
Sakura – Lastly on my 2009 list is Sakura Matō from the series Fate / Stay Night. I picked this character for the attention to detail that went into it (that and the price was good too).

If you are a fan of CLANNAD then you may appreciate this figure. From Dream Tech, here is a nice looking 1/7 scale figurine of Sakagami Tomoyo.

She probably one of my favorite characters in CLANNAD. Fun seeing an unassuming character that can kick some tail when need be.

Well, I understand that Comiket 77 has come and gone but not without news of some interesting goodies coming in 2010. By goodies I am referring to Figurines. Here is a sampling of what we can look forward to and save up for…

First up, Black Rock Shooter, Nendoroid. Probably no doubt that you have seen the scale version of this character….Release date and price TBA.

From Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS comes Subaru Nakajima. Though I am not familiar with this series (aka, I have not seen any of it) this figure caught my eye. Particurily for the eyes. This looks to be a fun figure to add to ones collection.
